From Rigveda period, plants play a major role in treating diseases. Herbal drugs were used as household remedies from our ancestors till now. It was reported that, India's exports for medicinal plants have elevated to 137% and stands second next to china. Gymnema sylvestre (Sirukurinjan) is a potent antidiabetic herb used in ayurvedic and homeopathic systems of medicine. It is also used for the treatment of cough, fever, snake bite, stomach problems, breathing troubles, dermatological ailments, etc. It posseses antimicrobial, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypercholesterolemia and anti-sweetener properties. It has the ability to restore pancreatic function by increasing the number of β-cells and insulin release. There is a growing demand in pharmaceutical trade for G. sylvestre leaves. It has the ability to eliminate the taste of sweetness; hence, it is known as destroyer of sugar from ancient time. From 1930, G. sylvestre was found to have promising therapy for type 1 and 2 diabetes with minimal side effects. It has the propensity to decrease the body weight; prevent triglycerides and fatty acid accumulation in muscle and liver, and in circulation respectively. Hence, there are several studies still being carried out on these plants on their other aspects, such as toxicity and delivery methods with suitable formulation.

Medical Uses

  • Its use in snake bite as a remedy was well known to the natives of the Konkan in India and the natives of Southern India.
